Filing

The paper in this office stacks up faster than I can deal with it,
particularly because less than 35% of the files (that I've thus far
looked for and recorded) are in their proper place. The remainder are
scattered through attorneys' offices, which is convenient for them,
but is a pain for me.

My plan for the new year here is to start digitizing everything. All
paper files stay in the wall, and the attorneys get to look at a hard
copy of something once before it goes into its file. After
that, they can pull up the PDF off the network. That way, all I have
to file is new stuff that's incoming and all the files are in one
location. As an added bonus, since all the hard copies are in one
place, they're at a much lower risk of being misplaced for the rare
occasions that a hard copy is needed. Added bonus two, since the
archives will be 100% digital, finding something will require finding
the right (CD-R/DVD(+/-)R/zip/etc) dis(c/k), rather than either
searching through boxes in a storage room, or having to get things
shipped from an off-site archival facility.

Now, we've had the technology to do this for some time. Why didn't we
do this sooner?
