Welcome to the 21st century

It's kind of slow in the office today, so I've been working on the
filing. The fact that we are nearly in the year 2006 and people are
still using paper files is shocking. We have a network
copier/printer/scanner here with an auto document feeder that will
auto-convert scans into PDFs and store them on a network drive. I
don't see why we can't scan everything as it comes in, and just have
the attorneys work off PDFs on their computers (put the 20-something
inch, wide screen, high-def, LCD flat panels to some use). All the
files could stay in the file room, and filing the papers that come in
would take a tenth of the time it does now.

So my advice to my generation. Push for the digital workplace
wherever you go. As long as you follow reasonable backup procedures,
it will help everybody in the long run.
