Law would be a great business without the clients

One of the partners here is on vacation. In Hawaii. Five hours
behind Eastern Standard Time. Now, a normal person would assume that
a man who has been practicing law long enough and well enough to be a
named partner in a highly respected firm would have made sure that no
deadlines were going to pass in his absence. A normal person would
also let this poor man relax while on vacation. This one particular
client is not a normal person. She calls at least 5 times a day
asking if her attorney has e-mailed us, if he's called us, if we've
called him, if we could fax a letter to his hotel so he could approve
her revisions and send it out. Never mind that it's 10AM in Hawaii,
and he's probably just being served breakfast by the pool.

My solution is that we need to amend our boilerplate retainer
agreement. If an attorney announces a vacation, any work you ask said
attorney to do while on vacation is billed at triple the normal rate.
I'm sure that at $1,125 an hour, people like this client would think
twice.
